1. Payment methods
I use Square for my online payments. I send an invoice to your email address, which will contain a link that you can use to pay with a credit card or a debit card. While I prefer to use Square, I can invoice you via Paypal if absolutely necessary.
2. Covers designed with stock photos and images
My base rate for a custom cover made from stock images is $50. This covers most stock images from sites I use. If you need specialty stock or an extended license for the images, you may need to purchase them separately, but in most cases this isn’t necessary.
Note: My rates will be going up to $75/cover as of January 1st, 2019.
The basic process starts with you telling me your title, author name, genre, and a bit about the mood of the story and the characters in it. I will create at least two options in a low-resolution format, and tell you the cost of the stock photos involved. You then choose a cover. I will invoice you at this point. When I receive your payment, I will create the high-resolution version of the cover and send it to you.
3. Commissioning a cover painting
My base rate for an original artwork for a book cover starts at $500 for one figure with a plain background and goes up from there depending on how complex the piece is. For example, a painting like the one on the cover of Torchship Captain could be $700 or more.
If you purchase a cover painting I will design the cover for free, but if you prefer to use another cover designer, that is fine.
So, if you’re in the market for an ebook cover with an original artwork on it, let me know what you’re looking for and we can start the discussion there. You haven’t committed yourself to anything by talking with me.
I work digitally for the most part, in Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter, and I usually paint it in black and white first, then layer colors over it. Occasionally I’ll work in pencil and conté crayon on textured paper, or add elements of photomanipulation.
When we agree on a cover concept and a price, I’ll send you a contract. After that’s signed, I’ll start work on a rough sketch. If you agree with the direction the painting is going, I’ll invoice you for half of the amount we agree on, and continue the painting once you pay. When the painting is finished, I’ll send you a low-resolution copy for final approval. Once you give your approval, I’ll invoice you for the rest of the payment and, when I receive your payment, I’ll send you a high-resolution copy of the painting and the book cover design.
Note: Paintings are time-consuming, and as such I only work on one at a time. Please inquire first as to whether I have space in my schedule.
Copyright: I retain the copyright to the artwork and rights to sell prints, T-shirts, and so on of it. If you wish to purchase the copyright and sell prints yourself, there will be an additional fee. If you want to give away T-shirts or other items with your book cover on them as a promotion, that’s fine, but if you want to sell items like that, please talk to me first.
You can use the image in advertisements selling your book on Facebook, Amazon, printed materials, and similar promotions. (I can also design advertisements–see #4 below.) You are free to use the image in social media, websites, convention materials, bookmarks, flyers, and so on.
4. Additional services
I can also create covers for print editions, Facebook ads, Facebook cover/header images, covers for ebook bundles/box sets, website graphics, and social media graphics. In these cases, if I did not create the original covers you will need to supply them to me.
Costs for these services start at $15 each, but I do offer a discount if you order three or more at a time. Contact me if you have questions or if you would like a quote.
